On an Outlook attachment and check the 'Hide extension' checkmark in Outlook 'Save as.' Dialogue box, the file extension isn't actually hidden, it's outright removed. Even though, I remove the file extension when I give the file a new name. Since filename extensions are always hidden in Mac OS X. So, please go to Finder > Preferences, then click Advanced > select Show all filename extensions.
